From SA's Got Talent to a Studio in Centurion

Kryptonite Dance Academy opened in Centurion in 2013, with two founders, a rented room and a handful of students who wanted to train hip hop properly.

Three years later, Eugene Baloyi and Zoyi Muendane walked onto the SA's Got Talent stage and won it.

The room before the win

The academy started because the training they wanted did not exist here. Hip hop in South Africa had crews and battles, but few places where a beginner could learn foundations week after week with a standard attached.

So they built one. Classes ran, students arrived by word of mouth, and the standard was set by the two of them rather than by a syllabus.

2016

The SA's Got Talent routine was storytelling through movement, built on years of training rather than on a viral idea. The country watched two dancers from Centurion do something it had not seen on that stage before.

The win did not create the academy. It made people notice it. Enquiries rose, the studio filled, and parents who had never considered dance as an activity started asking about classes for their children.

What it changed, and what it did not

The win brought attention. It did not change what happens in a class on a Tuesday evening: warm-up, drills, choreography, corrections. Thirteen years of that is the actual story.

Students who started in those early years now teach, compete and perform. A few have opened their own studios. That is the part the trophy does not show.
