Meet the Founders of Kryptonite Dance Academy

Eugene Baloyi and Zoyi Lindiwe Muendane run Kryptonite Dance Academy in Centurion. They were dancers before they were teachers, and the academy still carries the standard they set for themselves.

Eugene Baloyi

Eugene handles choreography. He has performed and taught for more than a decade, and he brings that into the studio rather than leaving it on a stage.

His classes are built on repetition. He takes a phrase apart until the group can dance it without watching him, then puts it back together at speed. Students who arrive convinced they cannot learn choreography discover otherwise within a term.

His own path ran from dancing in the streets of Gauteng to winning SA's Got Talent in 2016. He talks about that rarely in class, and when he does it is about the work behind it rather than the win.

His line: "Dance is not just movement. It's a language that speaks louder than words."

Zoyi Lindiwe Muendane

Zoyi handles creative direction at Kryptonite. She's choreographed for brands and events across Southern Africa, and she now guides the academy's creative direction and mentor development.

Her focus is confidence. She wants students to leave better about themselves and better at dancing, in that order, because the second one does not stick without the first. "Dance teaches you to trust yourself," she says. "Once you trust your body, you can do anything."

Zoyi sees Kryptonite as a platform for African dance at a global level, and she is working toward it one student at a time.

The mentor team

Six mentors teach at the academy, and every one of them is a working dancer first. Kgothatso "Bugz" Lebeko teaches popping. Classes are built so that a student meets every style before choosing where to go deep.

Why the academy exists

The founders started Kryptonite to give young South Africans a place to train seriously without leaving the country to do it. That has not changed. What has changed is the number of students who now teach, compete and perform after starting in a Beginner class in Centurion.

If you want to train with them, Beginner and Kidz classes are open enrolment. Message 082 572 9407 or see the classes page for times and fees.
